Work We Turn Down

Most Charleston houses we get called to were built between 1971 and 2002, and across the thirteen named areas we work in, the stock runs heavy on 1980s and '90s construction. That means a lot of the doors and openers we see use parts that are still easy to source, which keeps most repairs straightforward.

Where we draw the line: if a door has been welded, bent back into shape, or patched with mismatched panels from a different model, we'll tell you straight that a repair is a short-term fix at best and recommend replacement instead. We also don't do structural framing work - if the opening itself is out of square or the header is compromised, that's a carpentry or general contractor job, not a garage door job, and we'll say so rather than take the call anyway.

We don't touch doors where the issue is really an electrical problem upstream of the opener - a dedicated circuit that's tripping, wiring in the wall, that kind of thing. That goes to a licensed electrician. And on torsion spring systems, if a homeowner tells us they want to do the spring swap themselves and just want us to come look afterward, we won't sign off on someone else's spring work sight unseen. Springs under load are the one place in this trade where a mistake sends someone to the hospital, and we're not going to pretend otherwise.

Contacting Us

Call us at 1-843-466-6186. That's the fastest way to get a job looked at, whether it's a door stuck half-open or a spring that let go overnight.

Our address is 1301 Charleston Regional Pky, Charleston, SC 29492. We're set up to run calls out from there across the Charleston area without a dispatch office in every town.

When you call, it helps to know the brand on the opener (if there is one) and roughly how old the door is - doors from the 1980s and '90s stock that's common here often take different track hardware than anything built in the last ten years, so having that detail ready saves a trip back to the truck for the right part.

What we find

The Areas We Cover

We work throughout the Charleston service area, which runs from West Ashley (about 3 miles southwest) and Ansonborough and Harleston Village (both 4 miles, southeast and south-southeast) out to the barrier islands and the areas north of the harbor.

Going further out: Mount Pleasant (6 miles), James Island and Hanahan (7 miles each), North Charleston (8 miles), Sullivan's Island (9 miles), Folly Beach (11 miles), Goose Creek (12 miles), Isle of Palms (13 miles), Wild Dunes (14 miles east), Hollywood (14 miles), Ladson (15 miles), Kiawah Island and Ravenel (16 miles each), and Meggett (19 miles).

That's a wide mix of housing - the barrier island properties deal with more salt and humidity exposure than the inland areas, which shows up in how fast galvanized hardware and rollers wear out. The region's mild climate with occasional freeze events means we don't see the deep winter spring failures that colder regions deal with, but humidity-driven rust on tracks and hinges is a steady issue no matter which of these areas a house sits in.

Questions

Common questions

Do you work on doors from the 1980s and 90s?

Yes - that's the most common era of door we see, since most houses in the service area were built between 1971 and 2002. Parts for that generation of door and opener are still generally available, so repair is usually realistic rather than a forced replacement.

What won't you repair?

We won't repair a door that's been structurally bent or welded back into shape, and we don't do framing or electrical work behind the opener. If a torsion spring job was already started by someone else, we won't finish it sight unseen - that's a safety call, not a convenience one.

How far out do you travel?

We cover the Charleston area out to roughly a 19-mile radius, from West Ashley and Ansonborough close in to Kiawah Island, Ravenel, and Meggett further out. Call and give your address and we'll tell you straight whether it's in range.

Does the salt air on the islands cause different problems?

On Sullivan's Island, Isle of Palms, Folly Beach, and Kiawah, we see faster rust on tracks, hinges, and rollers than on inland jobs, driven by salt and humidity rather than temperature. Galvanized hardware still wears out quicker out there, so more frequent lubrication and earlier roller replacement tend to pay off.

What should I have ready when I call?

Have the opener brand if you know it, roughly how old the door is, and a short description of what it's doing - won't open, makes noise, closes partway. Call 1-843-466-6186 with that and we can usually tell you what's likely going on before a truck is even on the way.
